Respect Group was created by co-founders, Sheldon Kennedy and Wayne McNeil, to pursue their common passion; working to empower people to recognize and prevent abuse, bullying, and harassment. Respect in Sport for Parents compliments the Activity Leader & Coach program by reinforcing a parent's role in their child’s activities. It empowers parents to:

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of their children.
  • Encourage proper communication with officials and coaches.
  • Make sport and recreation result in a positive experience for all.


In Canadian hockey, over 319,000 parents who have completed the Respect in Sport for Parents Program.

Q: What is Respect in Sport?

A: The Respect in Sport for Coaches and Activity Leaders Program is the program hockey coaches need to train your organizations' youth leaders to recognize, understand and respond to issues of bullying, abuse, harassment and discrimination.

The Respect in Sport for Parents Program is effective and informative for parents and caregivers of active children. This program encourages positive sport behaviors, and provides insight for parents into the roles of coaches and officials.

Q: How do I sign up for and take the Respect in Sport online course?

A: You need to sign up through your local Member Branch. You can find your Member Branch coaching contact.

Q: I took RIS with another sport. Do I have to take it again?

A: No. However you will have ’register’ your certificate number. "Parent" for parent and "Coach" for coach.

Please contact your Member Branch coaching contacts for a registration link.

Q: I have taken the Speak Out course. Do parents need to take Respect in Sport?

A: Yes. Speak Out does not cover Respect in Sport for Parents.
