We are Coaches

On Saturday November 4th, Hockey Canada, in conjunction with the Coaching Association of Canada and the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association hosted a one day Coaches clinic for Women. The ‘We are Coaches’ program is aimed at increasing the number of trained female coaches actively coaching at the community level in Canada in order to provide female role models and future leaders for sport.

The Clinic was a great success with 14 women getting training at the Coach Level. Fran Rider of the OWHA would like to thank all of the participants for taking part in the clinic and encourages them all to continue to be an integral part in the growth of female hockey. These coaches will be contributing to the development and positive experiences of athletes for years to come.

Hockey Canada Skills Camp

Kitchener also hosted an all female Hockey Canada Skills Camp on Sunday November 5th. Forty-none participants took part in the day-long camp with two on-ice skill development sessions and two off-ice sessions focusing on respect for the game and off-ice training. PAWSITIVE, the OWHA mascot, made an appearance to encourage the young athletes to be respectful and to be good role models for the game of female hockey.

Hockey Canada Schools Program

Hockey Canada and the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association hosted a very successful Schools Program on Tuesday November 7th, at the Kitchener Auditorium. 350 students took part in the “overtime program” where students and teachers had the opportunity to take part in ten learning stations around the arena, including fitness, history of female hockey, coaching values, players’ perspective, officiating, Zamboni operations, hockey opportunities, the goalie stop, media, and a Domino’s pizza stop. At the conclusion of the “Overtime Program” over 4000 students and teachers watched and cheered for Team Finland and Team Sweden.
