White 5 - AAA Flames 4

POTOMAK SCORES WINNER TO HELP WHITE PAST FLAMES

JORDAN MADY

CALGARY, Alta. – Sarah Potomak (Aldergrove, B.C./University of Minnesota, WCHA) converted on a power play with 7:06 to go, giving White a 5-4 victory over the Calgary AAA Flames on Saturday afternoon at Canada’s National Women’s Team Fall Festival.

White earned wins in both its games against Alberta Midget Hockey League competition at camp; it topped the Calgary AAA Royals 5-2 in its opening game Thursday night.

Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, Ont./Calgary, CWHL) was the offensive star, scoring a second-period hat trick to put White up 4-2 after 40 minutes before the Flames briefly pulled even in the third.

Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, Ont./Brampton, CWHL) contributed a goal and two assists, while Hayley Wickenheiser (Shaunavon, Sask./Calgary, CHWL) and Erin Ambrose (Keswick, Ont./Toronto, CWHL) had one of each.

The Flames struck first just past the six-minute mark when Eric Martin buried a rebound after Jacob Suto circled the net and let go a shot on White goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Kingston, Ont./Calgary, CWHL).

The Canadian women tied it at 14:18 when a shot from Rattray redirected off a skate and through Calgary netminder Brett Balas to send the game to the intermission tied 1-1.

Johnston netted her first goal just 1:43 into the second period, stopping at the hashmarks and ripping a shot over the shoulder of Balas, but Neil Kingston got his own rebound and beat Lacasse to tie the game at 7:13.

Johnston restored the White lead at 13:20, when a shot redirected off the forward and past Balas, and she completed her hat trick less than five minutes later, jumping on a rebound at the side of the net for a power-play goal and a 4-2 White advantage after two periods.

But the Flames battled back in the third, with Marin scoring his second just 72 seconds into the final frame, and Benjamin Sanderson tying the game just past the midway mark.

A too-many-players-on-the-ice penalty only 43 seconds after the Sanderson goal doomed the Flames, and Potomak made good with the man advantage to give White the win.

White finished with a narrow 30-29 advantage in shots on goal.

It finishes the camp Sunday morning, facing off against Red at 9 a.m. MT in the second intrasquad game, while the Flames meet the Calgary AAA Royals at 12:15 p.m. MT to finish the Fall Festival schedule.
