2014-15 National Sledge Team

Canada 0 - United States 2

CANADA BLANKED BY U.S. IN SLEDGE SERIES FINALE

DAVID BRIEN

INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. – Canada’s National Sledge Team had it chances, including a couple of posts, but couldn’t find the back of the net in a 2-0 loss to the United States in the finale of a three-game series on Saturday.

The Canadians were swept in the series – their first-ever sweep at the hands of the U.S. – and have lost seven in a row to the Americans, dating back to last January’s series in Indian Trail.

The U.S. struck quickly for the second game in a row; Declan Farmer converted on a power play opportunity just 5:54 in with Canadian forward Chris Cederstrand (Okotoks, Alta.) off for teeing.

The Americans continued the offensive push in the second period, going ahead by a pair at 2:14 of the middle frame when Farmer set up Brody Roybal for the 2-0 goal, and outshooting Canada 13-5 through 30 minutes.

The third period was scoreless, penalty-free and uneventful, with the teams combining for just five shots.

Corbin Watson (Kingsville, Ont.) got the start in the Canadian goal, giving up two goals on 13 shots before giving way to Dominic Larocque (Quebec City, Que.), who was rarely tested.

Steve Cash made eight saves for his second shutout of the series in the American goal.

Canada won’t see the ice again until it opens the 2015 IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship against Japan on April 26 in Buffalo, N.Y. The Canadians are defending world champions, winning gold in Goyang, South Korea in 2013.
