Game Story

CANADA BEATS GERMANY, MAKES IT FOUR IN A ROW AT WORLDS

QUINTON AMUNDSON

KOŠICE, Slovakia – Mark Stone (Winnipeg, Man./Vegas, NHL) produced a hat trick and Anthony Mantha (Longueuil, Que./Detroit, NHL) scored twice to lead Canada’s National Men’s Team to an 8-1 win over Germany at the 2019 IIHF World Championship on Saturday.

The win, Canada’s fourth in a row, pulls the Canadians into a tie with Germany (4-1) for second place in the Group A standings, just one point behind Finland.

Thomas Chabot (Sainte-Marie-de-Beauce, Que./Ottawa, NHL), Sam Reinhart (West Vancouver, B.C./Buffalo, NHL) and Anthony Cirelli (Woodbridge, Ont./Tampa Bay, NHL) also scored for Canada, which has clinched a berth in the quarter-finals. Matt Murray (Thunder Bay, Ont./Pittsburgh, NHL) stopped 15 of 16 shots for the win.

The Canadians set themselves up for a strong first period by drawing first blood just over two minutes into the contest as Chabot found the top corner with a slap shot for a power-play marker.

Stone doubled Canada’s lead with 3:17 remaining in the opening period, cashing in the rebound off a Damon Severson (Melville, Sask./New Jersey, NHL) deflection in the slot.

Period two was all Canada as it generated the first 16 shots in the frame.

Stone scored his second goal at 6:02 with a wrist shot from the slot on the power play.

Yasin Ehliz scored Germany’s lone goal on its only shot of the second period with 1:59 left to make the score 3-1, but Stone chipped the puck into the net 48 seconds later to restore Canada’s three-goal edge.

Canada’s offence kept pouring it on with four goals in the third period.

Mantha made it 5-1 at 3:01 with a between-the-legs beauty, and he struck again less than two minutes later for his tournament-leading seventh goal.

Reinhart scored Canada’s third goal in a 2:27 span with a snap shot from the slot before Cirelli delivered the final goal, the first shorthanded marker of the tournament, with just under seven minutes remaining.

Canada will pursue its fifth win Monday against Denmark (2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PT).
