Game Story

MARTINEAU HAS THREE POINTS TO PUSH COBRAS PAST VEES

JASON LA ROSE

COBOURG, Ont. – Pierre-Anthony Martineau was in on all three goals – scoring once and adding two assists – to lead the Cobras de Terrebonne to a 3-1 win over the Penticton Vees in the preliminary-round finale for both Thursday at the 2017 RBC Cup.

The win temporarily moves the Cobras into a three-way tie for second place with the Vees and Cobourg Cougars, but that could change depending on the outcome of the Cobourg-Brooks game Thursday night.

Jérémy Bélisle starred in the Terrebonne goal, making 37 saves to record the win.

Both teams came out shooting in the first period, combining for 24 shots in the opening 20 minutes, but it took until the late moments for the Cobras to break through.

With Terrebonne enjoying a five-on-three power play, Gabriel Paquin worked the puck cross-crease to Raphael Sawyer, whose shot sat in the blue ice before Martineau poked it in for the 1-0 goal at 18:02.

Just over a minute later, a dump-in eluded Penticton goaltender Mat Robson and Martineau threw it back towards the front of the net, where it bounced around before Paquin knocked it past a diving Robson to double the lead after one period.

Penticton picked up its game in the second, outshooting Terrebonne 14-8, but it was the Cobras who struck for the lone goal of the middle frame.

Martineau chipped the puck out of the defensive zone and Mickaël Lafrance-Clairsant carried it deep before finding Benjamin Bohémier, who roofed it short-side on Robson to make it 3-0 just past the seven-minute mark.

That would be more than enough offence for Bélisle, who finished his performance with 12 more saves in the third period.

Owen Sillinger ruined the shutout bid seven minutes into the third period, tapping a rebound past Bélisle, but the Vees couldn’t find the net again.

The Cobras and Vees will wait for the finish of the prelim finale before finding out their semifinal opponents for Saturday; Terrebonne will finish third and Penticton fourth unless Brooks wins in regulation, in which case the positions will be switched.
