THREE GOALS IN THIRD HELP WHITE AVOID U18 CAMP SWEEP

JASON LA ROSE

CALGARY, Alta. – Jérémy Roy (Richelieu, Que./Sherbrooke, QMJHL) scored the winner with 3:31 to go, helping White avoid an intrasquad sweep at Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team selection camp with a 3-2 victory over Red on Tuesday afternoon.

White trailed 2-0 after two periods before rattling off three goals in the third – one more than it had scored in the first eight periods of camp combined.

Red opened camp with a 6-0 win on Sunday, and made it two in a row with a 3-2 victory Monday night, a game in which White’s goals both came in the final 37 seconds.

Tyler Soy (Surrey, B.C./Victoria, WHL) and Blake Speers (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont./Sault Ste. Marie, OHL) had the other goals for White, which finally took advantage of its scoring chances in the final 20 minutes.

Dylan Strome (Mississauga, Ont./Erie, OHL) and Mitchell Stephens (Peterborough, Ont./Saginaw, OHL) scored for Red.

Strome opened the scoring for the second game in a row late in the first period, finishing off a pretty feed from Mitchell Marner (Thornhill, Ont./London, OHL), and Stephens doubled the lead 6:43 into the second, bursting down the right wing while shorthanded and snapping a shot to the far side past the glove of White goaltender Olivier Tremblay (Chicoutimi, Que./Rimouski, QMJHL).

Twenty minutes from a third-straight loss, White got on the board just 1:16 after the puck dropped to start the third period; Soy took a pass from Jansen Harkins (North Vancouver, B.C./Prince George, WHL), cut to the net and slipped a shot under a sprawling Callum Booth (Montreal, Que./Quebec, QMJHL).

Speers tied it six minutes later, roofing a shot over Booth’s glove from in close after a feed from Nathan Noel (St. John’s, N.L./Saint John, QMJHL).

With overtime looking, Mathew Barzal (Coquitlam, B.C./Seattle, WHL) found Roy creeping in off the blue-line, and the defenceman beat Booth with a quick shot for the game-winner.

White outshot Red 30-14, including 13-4 in the decisive third period.

Nick McBride (Maple Ridge, B.C./Prince Albert, WHL) picked up the win in the White goal, stopping all six shots he faced after taking over for Tremblay, who gave up two goals on eight shots.

Zach Sawchenko (Calgary, Alta./Moose Jaw, WHL) got the start for Red, making 12 saves on as many chances, before giving way to Booth, who stopped 15 of 18.
