Statement from the 13 leaders of the provincial and territorial Hockey Canada branches

February 4, 2023
|

The 13 Hockey Canada branch leaders met with the new Hockey Canada Board of Directors for the first time on Saturday, Feb. 4, in Toronto, Ont.

The Hockey Canada Board and senior staff provided the branches with a comprehensive summary as to the state of the organization and plans to lead it forward in 2023, following the criticism and scrutiny of the past year.

The discussion addressed Hockey Canada’s insurance programs and its financial picture as well as early consideration of the Honourable Thomas Cromwell’s governance recommendations.

The day-long meeting concluded with a frank, honest and open discussion that involved the new Board and senior staff, and branch leaders and top employees. There was a feeling that the organization is on a path that includes significant change, greater inclusivity and most paramount – a safe environment for all.

Following the meeting it was the consensus of the 13 branches that it was a highly productive day.  There is an increased comfort level that Hockey Canada is on the right track, and that Hockey Canada’s actions, increased transparency and commitment to change are all positive and important steps.

Accomplishing these objectives and restoring the public’s faith is not a short-term task but rather an ongoing and never-ending process. The branches felt that it was important to share publicly that they are fully supportive of the new direction and changes, as well as the new Board itself.  All are equally committed to working with the Board in this highly-important mission.
