BLUE PULLS AWAY TO BEAT RED IN U17 CAMP OPENER
TAYLOR CROSBY
CALGARY, Alta. – Aidan Prueter (London, Ont./London, MHAO) scored twice and added an assist, Joe Carroll (Almonte, Ont./Carleton Place, HEO) added a goal and two helpers, and Blue opened Canada’s national under-17 development camp with a 6-1 win over Red on Wednesday afternoon.
A dominant final 34 minutes (periods are 17 minutes at camp) and stellar goaltending were the difference for Blue, which scored five unanswered goals to close out the victory.
After a scoreless first period, Blue got the opening goal just 33 seconds into the second, with Kaedan Korczak (Yorkton, Sask./ Yorkton, SMAAAHL) hammering in a one-timer from the point on the power play.
Ryan Suzuki (London, Ont. London, MHAO) quickly responded for Red, capitalizing on a two-man advantage at 3:37, but Prueter would get his first of the night less than two minutes later, keeping on a two-on-one and beating Red goaltender Byron Fancy (Claresholm, Alta./Lethbridge, AMHL).
Jamieson Rees (Hamilton, Ont./Mississauga Reps, GTHL) added another with just 14 seconds left in the second period, showing great patience in close to beat netminder Trent Miner (Souris, Man./Brandon, MMAAAHL).
Red looked for an answer in the third period, but it was all Blue.
Prueter added his second goal midway through the final frame, and helped set up Henrik Rybinski (Vancouver, B.C./Greater Vancouver, BCMML) for the 5-1 goal less than five minutes later.
Carroll finished the scoring with an unassisted marker in the dying seconds, showing off his hands in close before flicking a backhand past Miner.
Blue outshot Red 21-8 in the third period, and 37-23 overall.
Roman Basran got the start in the Blue goal and stopped nine of 10 before giving way to Nolan Maier, who was perfect on 13 chances. Fancy (10 saves) and Miner (21 saves) combined for 31 saves for Red.
