Game Story

CANTONNIERS DOWN TROJANS, BOOK RETURN TRIP TO TELUS CUP FINAL

JASON LA ROSE

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Tristan Roy scored twice, including the game-winning goal in the dying seconds of the second period, to send the Cantonniers de Magog back to the gold medal game at the TELUS Cup with a 4-2 semifinal win over the Tisdale Trojans on Saturday night.

The Cantonniers, who fell to the Notre Dame Hounds in the final a year ago, will face the Toronto Young Nationals for gold on Sunday night (6:30 p.m. ET) at the Fort William Gardens.

A win would make them the first team since the 1997 Thunder Bay to win Canada’s National Midget Championship the year after losing in the final.

Justin Robidas, who was named TELUS Cup MVP earlier in the day, finished with a goal and two assists.

After being blanked by Magog 6-0 in the tournament opener for both on Monday, the Trojans came out firing, testing Top Goaltender recipient Olivier Adam in the opening minutes.

But it was the Cantonniers who struck first; Robidas gathered in a pass from Jacob Dion and went five-hole on Tisdale goaltender Tanner Martin for a power-play goal and a 1-0 lead at 8:04.

Robidas provided the set-up four minutes later, throwing a beautiful feed in front for Zackary Michaud to tap in and send the Quebec Region champions to the dressing room up by a pair.

Trenton Curtis finally solved Adam just 53 seconds into the second period, chipping a shot past the glove of the Cantonniers netminder to get Trojans back in the game.

Cade Hayes tied it eight minutes later, absolutely wiring a shot upstairs on the blocker side.

The game looked to be headed to the intermission tied, but the puck rattled off skates and in front of the Tisdale net with time ticking down, and Roy buried the 3-2 goal with just 5.3 seconds left.

He added a second goal early in the third period, dancing through the Trojans defence before going to the backhand to beat Martin.

Magog held Tisdale to just six shots in the final frame, and had a 32-28 edge overall.

The Trojans will face the Calgary Buffaloes for bronze on Sunday afternoon (1 p.m. ET).
