Game Story

PAT CANADIANS BEAT BISONS TO WIN TELUS CUP BRONZE

DAVID BRIEN

RIVIÈRE-DU-LOUP, Que. – Two goals and an assist from Arthur Miller and a goal and a helper from Owen Sillinger helped the Regina Pat Canadians to a 6-3 win over the Strathmore Bisons on Sunday and the bronze medal at the 2015 TELUS Cup.

It’s the seventh time in eight appearances Regina has won a medal at Canada’s National Midget Championship; it now has four gold (1983, 1988, 1994, 1999), two silver (1985, 1989) and one bronze.

Tyran Brown, Tyler Adams and Conner Chaulk scored the other Regina goals and Riley Woods chipped in with three helpers for the Pat Canadians, who bounced back from their lone loss of the week to Toronto in Saturday’s semifinals.

Strathmore got two goals from Davis Sheldon and one from Joshua Bishop in a losing cause.

Not surprisingly, it’s was Regina’s top-ranked power play that gave it an early lead; all five players on the ice touched the puck before Chaulk tapped the rebound of a Sillinger shot past Cody Campbell just 2:12 in.

The Pat Canadians’ goal was a carbon copy of the first, except this time it was Miller burying the rebound of a Jake Tesarowski shot on the man advantage, putting Regina up 2-0 at 6:18 of the first period.

Miller’s goal meant an early end to the afternoon for Campbell, who was replaced by Kurtis Chapman.

Adams went five-hole on Chapman to make it a 3-0 game at 13:39, but the Bisons would strike back twice in the dying minutes to end the first period down by just a single goal.

Sheldon knocked in a loose puck in the Regina crease to get the Pacific Region champions on the board with 2:54 left in the opening frame, and added his second shorthanded with 25 seconds to go, wiring a shot just underneath the crossbar past Pat Canadians goaltender Curtis Meger.

Regina steadied the ship to start the second period and got the lead back to two when Sillinger patiently outwaited Chapman and slipped the puck past the Bisons netminder, before Brown restored the three-goal advantage at 12:22.

Strathmore came out firing in the third, outshooting the Pat Canadians 11-7 in the period, and got back within a pair when Bishop found the top corner past Meger right off an offensive zone face-off.

Miller banked a shot off a Strathmore defender and in for a little bit of insurance at 14:17, capping the scoring.
The Bisons finished with a 31-27 advantage in shots on goal.
