Game Story

FOUR IN THIRD PERIOD HELPS GRENADIERS TO COMEBACK WIN OVER BISONS

DAVID BRIEN

RIVIÈRE-DU-LOUP, Que. – Pierre-Luc Sanche opened and closed the scoring in a four-goal third period, helping the Grenadiers de Châteauguay to a come-from-behind 5-3 win over the Strathmore Bisons in both teams’ first taste of the 2015 TELUS Cup on Monday.

The Grenadiers trailed 2-0 after the first period and 3-1 after two before erupting in the final 20 minutes.
Xavier Grier, Shawn Kennedy and Adam Pilotte had the other goals for Châteauguay. Grier finished with a goal and two assists, Kennedy had a goal and a helper, and Maxime Comtois and Alexandre Desgagnés added two assists apiece.

William Conley, Shane Fraser and Zachary Cox had the goals for the Bisons, who made their debut at Canada’s National Midget Championship. Sebastian Kilcommons added two assists.

Conley opened the scoring on the power play just past the eight-minute mark of the first period, roofing a wrist shot to the short-side past Châteauguay goaltender Kyle Jessiman, and Fraser tipped in a shot from Kilcommons late in the first on another Bisons man advantage.

Grier and Cox exchanged goals 53 seconds apart midway through the second period, keeping the Pacific Region champions up by a pair of goals heading to the final 20 minutes.

Sanche got the comeback started just 47 seconds into the third period; the Châteauguay captain capitalized on a Grenadiers power play, skating in off the side boards and beating Strathmore netminder Kurtis Chapman.
Kennedy redirected a shot from Nicolas Desgroseilliers just over four minutes later, and Pilotte pounced on a juicy rebound in the slot at 12:13 to give Châteauguay its first lead of the game.

Sanche gave the Grenadiers some insurance and capped the scoring just 31 seconds after Pilotte’s goal.
Both sides had plenty of chances to work on their special teams; the teams combined for 17 power play opportunities and 82 penalty minutes. Châteauguay finished 1-for-7 with the man advantage, while the Bisons were 2-for-10.

The Grenadiers held a 37-33 advantage in shots on goal.

The Quebec Region champions will try to make it two wins in a row at Centre Premier Tech when they face the Regina Pat Canadians on Tuesday afternoon (noon ET), while the Bisons meet the host Albatros du Collège Notre-Dame in the day’s finale (7:30 p.m. ET).
