WAKEFIELD SCORES TWICE IN RED WIN AT FALL FESTIVAL

JORDAN MADY

CALGARY, Alta. – Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, Ont./Linköping HC, SWE) had a pair of goals, including the game-winner, to help Red stay unbeaten at Canada’s National Women’s Team Fall Festival with a 4-1 win over the Calgary AAA Royals on Saturday afternoon.

The victory is the third in as many days for Red, which edged the Calgary AAA Flames 4-3 in overtime Thursday night before coming from behind for a 4-2 win over White on Friday.

The Canadian women spread around the offence; seven different players recorded points in a fast-paced game with few whistles.

The goaltending duo of Emerance Maschmeyer (Bruderheim, Alta./Calgary, CWHL) and Erica Howe (Orleans, Ont./Brampton, CWHL) stopped 25 of 26 shots to the record the win.

The teams traded a handful of chances early on, but the game remained scoreless until the early moments of the second period.

Just 1:58 into the middle frame, Sophie Shirley (Saskatoon, Sask./Okanagan Hockey Academy, CSSHL) hustled to negate an icing and snapped a shot through Royals goaltender Samuel Burford to give Red a 1-0 lead.

That would be the lone marker of the second, despite a combined 23 shots on goal.

Wakefield doubled the advantage 4:38 into the third period, redirecting a Sarah Davis (Paradise, N.L.,/Calgary, CWHL) shot up and over Burford, and Natalie Spooner (Scarborough, Ont./Toronto, CWHL) roofed a wrist shot off the rush to put Red up 3-0 seven minutes later.

A late Royals power play became a six-on-four with Burford on the bench, but Wakefield found the empty net for a shorthanded marker with 1:40 to go to round out the scoring for White.

Alex MacLeod made good on the Calgary power play just 33 seconds after that to spoil the Red shutout.

Red will conclude its Fall Festival schedule with an intrasquad match-up against White on Sunday morning (9 a.m. MT), followed by the Royals meeting the Calgary AAA Flames (12:30 p.m. MT).
